With another Coachella in the rearview mirror and full-blown summer fast approaching, Los Angeles indulges its taste for change. LACMA hosts a mammoth art-book swap meet to refresh your shelves, Cinco de Mayo revelers raise their salt-rimmed glasses to revolution, and a new artisan press commemorates its own beginning. Some change can be bittersweet, of course — this week also marks the last installment of progressive rock night Check Yo' Ponytail, so head over to the goodbye party and show your love for all those years of bringing you the new.

  SPECIAL FEATURE
Four Tet

The mosaic of Kieran Hebden's musical narrative is one of constant, relentless evolution. From his collaborations as part of Fridge to the ever-mutating sound of his Four Tet moniker and his inspired improvisational playdates with legendary drummer Steve Reid, the UK-based producer/performer re-invents any genre he's exploring.

Despite being an aging "alternative nation" act, the Breeders continue to inspire legions of loyalists: Deerhunter singer Bradford Cox has recently been seen sporting a shirt emblazoned with their logo, and it's easy to hear Kim Deal's crunching choruses in his damaged dream-pop. Deal originally formed the Breeders with ex-Throwing Muse Tanya Donelly; just as Deal's other band, the Pixies, met their demise, the Breeders hit payload with Last Splash, their 1993 album that spawned one of the decade's best singles, "Cannonball." With Deal's twin sister Kelley back on board, this tour is more than a victory lap — the Breeders are playing songs from the Steve Albini-produced Mountain Battles, their first new record in six years. - Max Goldberg

Check Yo' Ponytail has hosted worldwide DJs from Justice to Spank Rock, MSTRKRFT to VHS or Beta, Datarock to the Teddybears. Tonight, it keeps the good stuff going with Baltimore-based Rye Rye, who drops all-homegirl, rap-studded electro, hot on the heels of her debut Coachella appearance. Costa Mesa's Acid Girls open with mind-numbing speed house; Bloomington, Indiana's Totally Michael play sweet 'n chewy bubblegum pop; and resident DJs Franki Chan and Paparazzi spin with video accompaniment by Demonbabies. However, this is also sadly the last CYP, so you might as well wear black. Ponytail, we hardly knew ye. - Shana Nys Dambrot

For the newest installment of its Contemporary Documentaries series, the Academy screens a double feature — a pair of films profiling two of the brightest, most influential figures in modern rock music (John Lennon and Leonard Cohen), with vastly diverse results. The US vs John Lennon reads more like a political exposé, detailing the shadowy events surrounding the federal government's suspicions about (and covert aggression toward) the ex-Beatle and his family. Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man, meanwhile, traces the recent Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame inductee through five decades of alt-folk superstardom and personal/political upheaval using extensive footage from his original concerts and a few all-star tributes. - Shana Nys Dambrot

Love is a battlefield in Sebastian Cordoba's documentary Through Thick and Thin, an exposé of gays and lesbians under homeland fire. Under current laws, thousands of Americans and their long-term partners could lose their homes, jobs, and each other as long as only legally married couples can apply for immigration rights. The film follows seven bi-national gay and lesbian couples with uncertain futures while supporting the Uniting American Families Act — a bill that would replace the word "spouse" with "permanent partner." Stick around for a post-screening discussion and a reception hosted by Absolut. - Julian Hooper

Pairing Tampa shock-hop duo Yo Majesty and UK dance punks Does It Offend You, Yeah? is an inspired idea — if only because the latter's question comes up for members of both bands (especially Yo Majesty's frequently topless ladies). After crashing onto the dirrrty club scene with 2006's Yo EP and a series of illicit live shows, Shunda K and Jwl. B signed with Domino in 2007. Matched by hard, sleazy production from electro duo HardfeelingsUK, their raps are fast, femme, and suggestive. Reading quartet DIOYY?, meanwhile, are known for their similarly raucous gigs, a fact rightly underscored by the title of their debut: You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourself Into. - Leah Taylor

Los Angeles has long been a breeding ground for the hilarious, thanks to veteran improv groups like the Groundlings and relative newcomers like the Upright Citizens Brigade (whose Casey Wilson is the newest SNL cast member). The LA Comedy Festival celebrates the scene with almost three weeks of nonstop improv, sketch, and standup comedy. Performers from across the continent descend upon the McCadden Theatre for the festival's third season, hoping to split a few sides and, ideally, become the next big thing. - Jessica Jardine

The Dodos' acoustic guitar-and-drums setup might seem the epitome of folky politeness, but their album Visiter boasts some of the year's most visceral indie rock. Drummer Logan Kroeber lays down polyrhythms while keeping true to his inner John Bonham, and Meric Long rivals Six Organs of Admittance's Ben Chasny for sheer acoustic-guitar skill. The comparisons to Animal Collective make sense — especially on the tribal coo-and-yelp of "Fools" — but traces of Meat Puppets II, Xiu Xiu percussion, and even some of Paul McCartney's classic ballads get swept up in the Dodos' whirlwind. They play tonight at the NHM's reliable First Fridays party, followed by DJ sets from Carlos Niño and Morpho in the African Mammal Hall. - Stephen Gossett

When he's not busy inking clients like Master P and Kiki Smith, internationally known tattoo artist Scott Harrison maintains a sweet little reputation as a supremely talented illustrator, painter, and cartoonist. His newest series, Undigested Kernel, depicts macabre black-and-white images of cone-headed circus freaks and axe-wielding skeletons. It arrives at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Silverlake alongside works by artists Samvel Saghatelian (aka Sam Saga) and Thomas Wargin. Saga's Architectural Monsters series uses sculpture and installations to explore the ridiculous tendencies of the nouveau riche to build big, while Harley Davidson designer Wargin employs bronze and aluminum sculptures to bring sketches to life. - Jessica Jardine

Heidi Duckler explores the roles played by the viewer, guest, and audience with a series of dance pieces in museum spaces (later works are planned for LACE and the Armory Center). Collage Dance Theatre is most often noted for its large-scale works, often occupying vast swaths of space within hotels, prisons, subway terminals, and newspaper factories, to name a few. In A Guide to an Exhibitionist, Duckler affords a more personal view of her work, guiding guests through the museum only 20 at a time. Relying on a quartet of dancers and multimedia projections, Exhibitionist offers a fine opportunity to experience CDT in an intimate, yet theatrically ripe environment. - Allen Moon

Kronos Quartet are risk takers, but their collaboration with Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq is really something special. Inuit throat singing is an otherworldly sound, a game of vocal hot potato in which two women toss rhythmic, guttural utterances back and forth. And Tagaq is no ordinary throat singer: more arctic raver than keeper of ancient arts, she's turned the traditional practice into a mode of sexy, avant-garde solo expression. (Just check her guest work on Björk's Medúlla.) Tonight, Kronos' strings play counterpoint to the singer's ferocious shrieks and murmurs in their co-written piece Nunavut — the orgasmic finale alone is worth the ticket — and a world premiere by Canadian composer Derek Charke. - Anna Balkrishna

The writers draw two words at random at 8pm on Friday and hand their hastily written scripts off to the directors and actors at 8am on Saturday. At 8pm on Sunday, audiences crowd into the theater at LA Center Studios to see the (hopefully) finished shorts. Under these circumstances, you'd be forgiven for assuming the results might be clunkers. But after 24 smash installments of Instant Films, which have included participants who've since gone on to do great things, the happiest surprise is the consistent quality and hilarity (not always anticipated) of the finished program. Pay attention, though, because the audience votes for the winners at the post-screening cocktail party. - Shana Nys Dambrot

The Dead Science singer Sam Mickens makes no bones about being a total and complete nut. Like fellow over-emoters Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu) and Casey Mercer (Frog Eyes), Mickens sings cracked art-pop songs with pants-on-fire urgency, while his band smashes orchestral elements together with anarchic glee. The results aren't exactly hummable, but the Dead Science's songs have an itchy, madcap appeal that's not unlike stumbling upon a mental patient's video diary on YouTube. Speaking of diaries, openers BARR are fronted by the equally intense (but considerably less artful) Brendan Fowler, whose self-obsessed logorrhea informs his seriously, totally, OMG personal speak-sing diatribes. - Todd Goldstein

As part of the Jack H. Skirball Screening Series, REDCAT presents the West Coast premiere of Iranian painter/video artist Mania Akbari's quasi-documentary account of her battle with cancer. 10 + 4 was created as a sequel to Abbas Kiarostami's Ten (2002), which starred Akbari and prompted her to trade at least some of her time in the painting studio for her own director's chair. In the end, Akbari emerges from her film stronger than before — living proof of the old saw that it's best to make art about what you know. - Ashley Tibbits

The Troubadour's Cinco de Mayo party features the all-lady pop-punk sounds of Go Betty Go along with fellow bilingual bands Monte Negro, No Way Jose, and Nuestra Sangre. Go Betty Go singer Emily Wynne-Hughes has the powerhouse pipes of the Detroit Cobras' Rachel Nagy and Joan Jett rolled into one. She and her girls (including an actual Betty on the drums) ring in the 5th with SoCal's finest Spanish-language punk rockers before heading off to Mexico to continue their pummeling, cross-cultural revelry. - Jessica Jardine

This year marks the 45th anniversary of By or of Marcel Duchamp or Rrose Sélavy, the famous Marcel Duchamp retrospective at the Pasadena Art Museum (now the Norton Simon). This commemorative exhibition, Marcel Duchamp Redux, contains a dozen works acquired in the time since that survey. Duchamp's dynamic, subversive conceptual bent is on display in a series of drawn-over reproductions (like the infamous Mona Lisa-with-a-mustache), "rotoreliefs" that haven't been on view since 1963, and images of the original retrospective, which Duchamp himself attended. - Alexx Shaw
