Look sharp: this Sunday is Mother's Day, and we're pretty sure Mom doesn't feel like watching round two of the NBA playoffs on your couch. Instead, we suggest you snag her a signed copy of Jimmy Carter's new book about his own mother. Or take your stepmother (the Maria kind, not the Baroness kind) to a special screening of The Sound of Music. For children of hippie moms, the Skirball screens classic Bob Dylan doc, Don't Look Back, and Burners without Borders fetes Mother Earth to raise money for its worldwide cleanup efforts. At least make sure you call (she worries, you know).

Hot on the heels of last month's supersized West Coast GrandSLAM, the Moth returns to its more intimate monthly rhythm with the almost too cute theme of weddings, honoring the kickoff of the springtime matrimonial season. Between obligatory emotional and financial meltdowns, overzealous relatives and domineering planners, wardrobe malfunctions, obsessive exes, seating-chart gaffes, drunken mishaps on the dance floor, inappropriate toasts, honeymoon horrors, cold feet, and hot buffets, weddings are a tailor-made subject for an amateur storytelling contest, judged by an audience plied with cocktail specials. - Shana Nys Dambrot

From a town called Noid, just outside of Bath in the UK, comes a one-band mash-up of Jamie Lidell, Al Green, and Sly & the Family Stone, produced with the lo-fi grit of the Go! Team. Appropriately enough, they're known as the Heavy. The quintet's debut, Great Vengeance and Furious Fire, runs the tired "party-funk band" cliché through the garage-rock wringer, and injects a much-needed dose of dirt, sex, and swagger into the genre. No wonder Playboy's sponsoring a string of dates on its first US tour. - Jorge Barriere

Drawing the ire of the Anti-Defamation League and grammar snobs alike, Jimmy Carter's Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid became a bestseller despite (or maybe because of) the controversy it caused. Now the man from Plains takes on a significantly less polarizing topic: his mom. A Remarkable Mother paints an inspiring portrait of Lillian Carter. From her nursing work during the great depression to volunteering for the Peace Corps at the age of 68, she personified the famous Carter spirit of humanitarianism. Any hassle tonight should prove worth it, come Mother's Day — you could do a lot worse than an autographed copy of Carter's love letter to mom. - Stephen Gossett

While often grouped with the freak-folk scene because of their close affiliation with (sometimes member) Devendra Banhart, Vetiver generally favor winsome pop melodies over tribal chants. In concert, guiding light Andy Cabic leads his shaggy but well-honed band through a warm set of originals, mellow arias, and affectionate covers. (Thing of the Past, Vetiver's upcoming album, collects some of these covers for one of the best tribute records since Yo La Tengo's Fakebook). Cabic's choice of songs bears the imprint of a sophisticated record collector, though the singer's lilting croon is reason enough to dive back in with Vetiver. - Max Goldberg

Los Angeles is a city of staggering diversity, but if you're searching for a common human denominator, there's nothing more ubiquitous or emblematic of this town than its traffic. That's the subject of From A to B, the second exhibition in a project series housed at the Fellows of Contemporary Art's downtown HQ. Tonight, curator Donna Conwell speaks about the exhibition, which comments on the inescapable experience of gridlock in LA and investigates the psychology of spatial relationships from behind the all-too-familiar glare of the windshield. - Heather Silva

At long last, some of Europe and Scandinavia's best folk- and Viking-metal acts make it to the States. From the Faroe Islands, Týr draw on Dream Theater and mid-era Metallica for accessible but epic Odin worship; Finnish acts Turisas and Ensiferum make some of the catchiest, horns-out battle hymns this side of the eighth century; and Swiss outfit Eluveitie prove that flutes, bagpipes, and hurdy gurdies can fit right in alongside double-kicks and power chords. Rounding out the bill, Germany's SuidAkrA are perhaps the darkest band of the evening — but they're no less catchy and medieval for it. - Gerry Mak

After nearly 20 years and just four LPs, British indie-pop darlings Elbow might finally be getting the attention they deserve. The Seldom Seen Kid, the Manchester quintet's most accessible record to date, debuted at number five on the UK charts — not bad for a band once known for its viral video of a Destiny's Child cover. Guy Garvey's nasal croon and smart lyrics provide an affecting complement to the moody arrangements and occasional bombastic crescendos, while vestiges of the band's more experimental early work linger in its inventive percussion and dexterous guitar melodies. Fellow Britpoppers Air Traffic open. - Joe Blankholm

Since its inception in 2002, the Rubberbandance Group has earned accolades from both street- and modern-dance aficionados. Now based in Montreal, founder and co-artistic director Victor Quijada cut his teeth in the hip-hop clubs of Los Angeles, while honing his skills as a performer under the instruction of LA icon Rudy Perez; he subsequently spent time with Twyla Tharp, Eliot Feld, and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. With Rubberbandance, he fuses disparate styles through a hip-hop filter, and the result is an immediate and fresh take on contemporary dance. - Allen Moon

The globally diverse artists in JAIL's latest endeavor have one thing in common: their work ignores the ugly cable-news cycle of reality in favor of escapist fantasy. Curator Annie Wharton, an internationally exhibiting painter herself, chose the 13 contributors for their collective tendency to glorify the imaginary, a desirable trait at a time when real life is an increasingly depressing subject. DREAM(land) features drawings and a collaborative video by South Korean Jiae Hwang, an installation by Wales' Neal Rock, and sculpture from California's own Joshua Levine. - Ashley Tibbits

Something about spending the morning taking a behind-the-scenes tour of the Egyptian Theatre, followed by a documentary celebrating the history of Hollywood glamour, practically screams "Mother's Day." Since its first red-carpet premiere (1922's Robin Hood), generations of fans, movie-makers, and stars have spent time in the Egyptian. With rare footage and voice-overs by everyone from Clint Eastwood to Rob Reiner, this program's combination of education and mom-friendly entertainment fully justifies the early alarm-clock setting. If your mom isn't a morning person, either, you can try tonight's 7:30pm screening of the 1965 über-classic The Sound of Music and its celebration of cool maternal types who can sing. - Shana Nys Dambrot

The wonderfully weird Cinefamily organization has enlisted a handful of talented local musicians, including Ariel Pink, to perform the live accompaniment to tonight's screening of early-cinema classics. The Man Who Laughs is a dark, German-expressionist tale about a 17th-century British aristocrat whose face is disfigured into a permanent, menacing grin by gypsies. The film is followed by the beloved French short A Trip to the Moon. Pink, whose spacey, lo-fi jams have earned him a devout following, tackles the live score alongside Plastic Crimewave (aka Steve Krakow) and Jimi Hey (formerly of Beachwood Sparks). - Jessica Jardine

According to the Directors Guild, women and minorities helmed only 17% of the top 40 prime-time TV shows of all time. This is exactly why AFI's Directing Workshop for Women (DWW) is so special. Since 1974, it has provided a tuition-free forum for women to create original films and allowed them to be screened in Hollywood's most esteemed venues. With an alumni list that includes Maya Angelou and directors from shows like Grey's Anatomy, Sex and the City, and The L Word, the annual showcase spotlights the next wave of women working behind the lens. Tonight, the current participants screen their future classics. - Jessica Jardine

With a penchant for shimmering feedback and reverb-drenched arrangements, Film School are adherents to the late-'80s/early-'90s shoegaze tradition. Although some find the band's pitch-perfect homage to acts like the Swirlies and My Bloody Valentine overly academic, it is precisely its close study of the genre's beau ideal (and addition of dream-pop flourishes, such as string and keyboard lines) that makes the performances so transfixing. Onstage, the quintet's ethereal vocals, gossamer melodies, and furiously loud guitars coalesce into an indistinguishable swirl of sound that rivals Kevin Shields' most gorgeous rackets. Tonight, Film School return in continued support of their third album, 2007's Hideout. - Suzanne Niemoth

Jeffrey Hatcher's critically acclaimed comedy takes it first LA bow at Theatre Theatre's brand-new Rogue Machine stage. Inspired by a real Shakespearean-era actor named Edward Kynaston, Hatcher's play travels to post-Restoration London where King Charles II has forbidden men from playing female roles. His career dead in the water, the flamboyant show pony faces an uncertain future — and the ridiculous reprisal of his signature role (Othello's Desdemona) by a female upstart. Relevant and biting, Compleat Female Stage Beauty surveys gender, sexuality, and Hollywood politics. (A script is currently being prepped for a feature production.) - Julian Hooper
