Sensing the futility of luring folks indoors during these azure-domed days, we've ditched gallery walls for a different kind of canvas: the city itself. Erik Davis guides a bus tour to landmarks of LA's visionary underground, while In Creative Unity throws a benefit to save the world-famous Venice graffiti pits. And if you're still roaming after sundown, MoCA's new outdoor film-and-music series and the return of Cemetery Screenings at Hollywood Forever have you covered under the sheltering skies.

SPECIAL FEATURE
Ralph Bakshi
|
|
|
Ralph Bakshi is an alt-animation pioneer. His controversial work paved the way for incendiary illustrators from The Ren & Stimpy Show's John Kricfalusi to South Park's Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Our sister publication Boldtype spoke with the reclusive animator about his artistic motivation, what he really thinks of Walt Disney, and the creatures that haunt his imagination.

For years, Venice's vibrant graffiti scene has been threatened by civic organizations, real-estate developers, and law-enforcement officials, all of whom would like to see the art form halted for different reasons. Graf-advocates In Creative Unity (ICU) gave the Venice graffiti pit a new degree of legitimacy a few years ago by transforming it into the Public Art Walls, but now budget cuts threaten the funding required to keep the spot alive. Tonight, nearly 50 artists, from Robbie Conal to Mear One, have donated work to be auctioned off by Culture Clash's Richard Montoya. The cash should tide the Walls over while ICU works out a more permanent solution.

You'd think a line like "Sheila, you look good today" belongs in a '60s love song by the Beach Boys, but Arizona-based Blackmarket use an arsenal of huge guitar riffs and pounding drums to make the words work in a different context: let-it-all-hang-out rock 'n roll. Daryl Lamont's vocals are a highlight, soaring above or floating gently alongside the band's clever hooks, and sometimes doing a little of both — check out the dynamic falsetto shifts in "Night in Question." For musicians who claim their story "isn't much different from anyone else's," Blackmarket's ability to elevate nearly every song to the level of anthem separates them from the pack.

The Egyptian Theatre offers a sneak preview of true-crime film Savage Grace as part of its Outfest Wednesdays. Julianne Moore plays Barbara Daly, a former actress whose marriage to plastics heir Brooks Baekeland (Stephen Dillane) ends in tragedy. As their young son Tony (Eddie Redmayne) becomes more comfortable with his homosexuality, his relationship with his parents falls into two different kinds of chaos — Tony's father withdraws completely, while his mother grows so close that her actions teeter on the edge of acceptable norms. The lush film spans 1946-1972 and features a diverse array of locations, including Cadaques, London, Mallorca, New York, and Paris.

Between willfully simple, '50s-inspired numbers like "I'm a Little Dinosaur" and his work with the Modern Lovers, Jonathan Richman has the mark of a true indie-rock legend. And the proto-punk veteran's cult following has only grown in recent months, with his series of appearances on biggest-fan-ever Conan O'Brien's show and the release of a new album, Not So Much to Be Loved as to Love, in late March. The cheeky, Boston-obsessed rocker brings his relentless touring machine back to LA this week for a four-night stand at the Mint alongside longtime drummer Tommy Larkins.

Dwell always goes big for Dwell on Design, the magazine's annual festival of aesthetics that's equal parts conference, product exhibition, and home tour. During the massive four-day event, more than 50 speakers discuss city-planning policies, pre-fab architecture, sustainable living, and everything in between. Full-scale structures landscaped and furnished by Dwell showcase cutting-edge design and construction methods. And, in case the more than 200 exhibitors don't make you feel at home, numerous residence tours let you examine houses in LA's Westside and Downtown neighborhoods. Most days are capped off by a cocktail party, where the magazine's editors mix and mingle with conference speakers and attendees.

In recent years, the UK Film Council has funded spectacular international movies like The Queen, The Last King of Scotland, and Vera Drake. The government agency champions the promising careers of individuals working in the British film industry — particularly those of African and Asian descent. Tonight, the Film Council hosts Breakthrough Brits, an honor program celebrating the most recent crop of British filmmaking talent, including actor/playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah, actor/director/writer Noel Clarke, producer Esther Douglas, and director John Giwa Amu. A reception is held in their honor at the glamorously redesigned London West Hollywood hotel.

John Darnielle has recorded so much under his Mountain Goats moniker that it's getting hard to track the shades of heartbreak. The North Carolina-based songwriter has recorded more than ten albums in about as many years, from ultra-lo-fi home recordings to lovely, confessional folk rock. His last record, Get Lonely, was by far his starkest, saddest collection, with songs ambling through barely catchy verses and perfunctory choruses. His newest release, Heretic Pride, marks the end of Darnielle's maudlin period, signaling a return to his trademark: frantic, sing-along story songs.

Those suffering from art attention-deficit disorder should appreciate Moving Arts' 14th Annual One-Act Play Festival, a yearly roundup of short 'n sweet theatrical pieces. This year, six local shorts make their festival debuts, including Kevin Christopher Snipes' Appalachian road-trip tale, Hip-Skidoo; Terence Anthony's "twisted landlord" opus, Tangled; and Kevin Doyle's competition-winning Compression of a Casualty, the account of an untold Iraq casualty told through actual CNN transcripts. An opening gala on June 7 brings out the players for a party, while June 6 offers a pay-what-you-can preview performance.

LA's most industry-beloved photo lab, Photo Impact, officially closed when its owner went in with A&I, but the group show LA Nude X at A&I's renovated Hollywood HQ, continues an annual tradition Photo Impact started and marks the merging of the current lab du jour with Photo Impact's storied legacy and celebrating the primal, ubiquitous appeal of the artistic nude. With artists like Greg Gorman, Dennis Hopper, Myra Vides and Douglas Kirkland among the partipants, the opening reception promises to be a raucous time both on and off the walls — and it's all for a good cause. Sales benefit the Aftermath Project's international documentary program, which chronicles the reconstruction of war- and weather-torn regions around the world.

Offering an uncompromising counterpoint to Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown's erratic pop exorcisms, British Columbia's Frog Eyes are an indie-rock success story that doesn't necessarily make a lot of sense. Singer Carey Mercer yelps more than croons, violently contorting his words in a series of self-inflicted seizures. Perhaps it's this embrace of unencumbered emotion — more than any kind of immediate aesthetic accessibility — that so endears the group to the straight-and-narrow scene. Drenched in echoing guitar offset by sparse drum fills, his songs are awash in the same unmitigated emotion as early Xiu Xiu. But where Xiu Xiu turn to poppy electronics to ingratiate themselves, Mercer sticks to honest, no-frills angst.

There are few ways to spend a more charming and relaxing weekend than visiting a local street fair, especially when the neighborhood is the effortlessly hip Los Feliz. The 17th Annual Los Feliz Village Street Fair arrives with all the bells and whistles that one might expect, including two stages with live music, street artists, wine and beer gardens, food from local restaurateurs, and goods for sale from local artists and retailers. Also, for the second year in a row, the Green Scene pavilion displays environmentally friendly and sustainable products. Just so the kids don't get too bored, there are also rides, a bouncy castle, and a magician to keep them entertained. This year's musical lineup includes Shane Alexander, Ultraviolet Sound, the Warned, Hazelden, and others.

UCLA's Royce Hall is home to an astounding array of dance, theatre, music, and multimedia events, but it rarely gets to flex its own muscle: one of the grandest pipe organs in town. That's where German all-star organist Christoph Bull comes in, with a fresh installment of his Organica series. The concert explores the traditional classical roots of the great compositions for the organ, as well as modern and contemporary songs meant to demonstrate the possibilities of the instrument's range. Bull is joined by a pair of promising young organists perpetuating the instrument's renaissance, and innovative visuals from New York's Benton-C Bainbridge, an in-demand VJ whose wizardry has further enriched the music of the Beastie Boys and Kanye West.

In an era of insane budgets and seamless CGI, it's worth taking a breath and enjoying the simple majesty of a film like Robert Altman's 1971 slice of indie-cinema heaven, McCabe & Mrs. Miller. Starring Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, and the songs of Leonard Cohen, this downtempo Western tells the story of an unlikely love affair between a conman and a madame in a turn-of-the-century Pacific Coast mining town. With perhaps the most memorable and poetic chase scene on film (it takes place in a freak blizzard), Christie's Oscar-nominated performance, and a screenplay rife with caustic humor, it's easy to see why the film stays a classic through the generations.

While there's a bit of chagrin underlying their sense of universal charity, indie-psych septet Afternoons shimmer with unflinching enthusiasm. Mimicking the work of indie-ensemble acts Bodies of Water and the Polyphonic Spree, billowing synth and organ tones bandy about long horn-draws, as heavy 4/4 beats propel angelic moans. When the smoke clears, straight indie-rock vocals bring things back to earth before disappearing into a series of anthemic interludes. In the midst of a month-long Spaceland residency, the band appears tonight alongside beach-tinged indie rockers Western States Motel and the delightfully atonal folkies of White Hinterland.

After graduation, most MFA recipients fret over finding places to show their work. This year's graduating class of visual artists at CalArts did its fretting in advance, and it has paid off. The group arranged for its thesis exhibition to be held at some of Chinatown's most respected galleries. We Want a New Object is the brainchild of a group that sees an audience for its work beyond studio critiques and grant proposals. The students' multimedia provide a peek at what these exhibition spaces might contain in the future.

A performance takes place Wednesday, June 4 (8-11pm). The closing party takes place on Saturday, June 7 (8pm-2am) at the Mountain Bar.
