In the immortal words of Dazed and Confused's Ms. Ginny Stroud, "OK guys, during the Fourth of July brouhaha, don't forget what you're celebrating — and that's the fact that a bunch of slave-owning, aristocratic, white males didn't want to pay their taxes!" If you feel like she has a point, declare your independence alongside the witty, politically savvy LA Art Girls as they throw themselves their very own biennial, or upset the apple cart with the rockabilly punks at Safari Sam's Brunch Americana. Do it your way — according to the Declaration, you have the right to pursue your happiness.

If you're tired of being the only person at parties who doesn't know what "obliterative countershading" is, Machine Project and the Sumi Ink Club are here to help. With a workshop that explains the basics of disruptive patterning, the group puts a contemporary spin on a centuries-old ink-drawing technique. Learn how to make brush-and-ink representations of humans and animals by applying abstract patterns, while simultaneously rendering them invisible. Sumi ink is a traditional Asian medium used for calligraphy and decorative illustration, but its meditative, mystical, and devotional aspects go well with the current rise of interactive, interdisciplinary art, such as the Club's recent work for Dublab's Into Infinity project.

Note:
This workshop is part of Industrial Melanism, an installation by Hanna Rose Shell that explores the nature of concealment. It runs through Saturday, July 5.

If late-night Def Poetry Jam reruns just aren't doing it for you anymore, get off your couch and speed yourself to the monthly soul-check that is Flypoet — a raucous LA institution that's one-third music show, one-third incendiary poetry slam, and one-third performance-art exhibition. Flypoet has launched the careers of street beats like Mayda del Valle, Steve Connell, and tonight's headliner, Sekou (tha Misfit), who, despite a wave of national attention, has chosen to celebrate the release of his new CD at this local event. The album, Afrodeezyackz/The Mumblings of a Madman, is a true labor of love that proves how rocking the page can be — just as compelling as catchy rock hooks.

In the early aughts, Pittsburgh scuzz-fuzz trio Modey Lemon were easy to lump in with a gaggle of garage revivalists. Nowadays, with their contemporaries aping new wave, recruiting Pharrell Williams, and generally running around in circles, Modey Lemon have emerged unscathed — not by re-inventing themselves, but by refining their shrieking blooze-punk. On Season of Sweets, Phil Boyd pushes his Spiritualized-style distorted riffs further into deep space, while the rhythm section stays locked on terra firma, with Jason Kirker and Paul Quattrone sounding like Animal from The Muppet Show jamming out with Geezer Butler. Check out "It Made You Dumb," a sunny scorcher with hooks and melody to spare.

An overstuffed white glove might bring to mind images of a Mickey Mouse cartoon, but for artist and curator Cecelia Kane, it stands for something much more troubling — the tragedy of the Iraq War. In Hand to Hand: Witnessing the War, Kane and her fellow artists paint actual news headlines pertaining to the war onto gloves, along with artistic interpretations of the events described. For the traveling exhibit, artists also integrate photography, sculpture, video, animation, glass, paper, bead work, printmaking, and even puppetry into their takes on the white glove and the conflict abroad.

Meg Wolfe's relentless creative spirit knows no bounds. Her energy produced the offbeat dance zine Itch Journal, the experimental series Anatomy Riot, and now Eleven Missing Days. Seizing on her uncanny ability to juxtapose diverse aesthetics, Days conjures a sleek dance/performance world inspired by the mysterious atmosphere of film noir. Wolfe also flexes her curatorial muscles to bring different perspectives to the show — she invites choreographers Faye Driscoll (NYC) and Arianne Hoffmann (LA) for the first week's run, and casebolt and smith (LA) and Sam Kim (NYC) for week two.

While Randy Newman's recent end-of-empire parable "A Few Words in Defense of Our Country" took a pretty dark turn, the husky-throated piano man remains the quintessential patriot — an ardent, active defender of democracy and freedom in America. After all, there's nothing more red, white, and blue than nearly 40 years of wry, tongue-in-cheek dissidence. Tonight, the undisputed king of the political story-songs rings in America's b-day (and the Dodgers' 50th anniverary) with classic baseball tunes at the Hollywood Bowl. Adding even more grandeur to an already epic evening, the LA Philharmonic help Newman clear the air for the Bowl's annual fireworks spectacular.

As students of cultural iconoclasm, the members of Argentinian art collective Mondongo — Juliana Laffitte, Manuel Mendanha, and Agustina Picasso — regularly reveal the dark subjects that underpin our everyday surroundings. Gaslighting, the group's current show at Track 16, refers to psychological abuse wherein victims question the reliability of their own memories and perception. To address this, the artists fuse thread, beads, tar, wax, and plasticine in a painstakingly slow process that produces intricate mixed-media paintings. The works tackle archetypes such as love, death, creation, and sex with a style that hovers between playful and perverse.

The Ford Amphitheatre's bucolic environment is the perfect setting for Viver Brasil's excursion into the seductive world of Afro-Bahian culture. Artistic director Linda Yudin has assembled musicians and dancers who meld traditional Brazilian music, costumes, and movement techniques with contemporary aesthetics. The results are electrifying, with the rhythms of congos, bongos, timbaus, and surdos pulsing off the stage and energizing the audience of carnivalistas. Get there early for dance lessons on the plaza, then join a vibrant caravan of drumming, singing, and samba dancing that leads into the venue.

If your ears are still ringing from last night's show (or from a few too many newfangled theme cocktails), attending Safari Sam's Brunch Americana is the perfect way to restore your health in time for the work week. The no-cover grub-fest goes down every Sunday and features live sets of alt-country, rockabilly, and roots tunes, along with a delicious midday meal. There's also a full bar, so you can acquire the hair of the dog, if need be. Resident western-swing aficionado DJ Jeff W hosts a revolving lineup of bands; this summer, watch for the Bonebrake Syncopators, the SideWynders, the Mooneyhams, and all manner of urban cowboys and girls hooting and hollering about the previous night's sins.

Pushing Sunday well into Monday morning, Om Records producer and DJ Marques Wyatt's finely crafted club night Deep showcases beat stars from around the world. But before taking to his own decks later tonight, he's joined in an offsite appearance at the Custom Sundaze pool party by NYC's John Dill, who has wisely chosen to spend his holiday weekend in sunny LA. No word on whether or not the latter packed swim trunks, but one thing's for sure: he'll definitely come carting crates and crates of bass-heavy, funk-infused "pickled house."

The history of the Gits, a Seattle band from the early '90s, starkly combines moments of exhilaration and devastation. In July 1993, just as the band was poised for a major breakthrough after spending years amassing a loyal following, lead singer Mia Zapata was found raped and murdered. The case went unsolved for seven years, until DNA evidence identified Zapata's killer — which is where documentary filmmaker Kerri O'Kane picks up the tragic story. Despite the closing of the case and the sentencing of Zapata's murderer, The Gits paints a picture of friends, family, and bandmates who grieve for the vibrant musician as much today as they did 15 years ago.

As the first wave of slowcore groups hit pay dirt with reunions and deluxe reissues, it's worth noting that Low is one of the few who never really went away. After 15 years together, the Minnesota trio's minimal, emotionally bruised music remains awesomely consistent. Low turned up the volume for their last couple of albums, but frontman Alan Sparhawk really chases his rock muse with the Retribution Gospel Choir, a side project he originally formed in 2005 with Red House Painter Mark Kozelek. Kozelek has since left, but Sparhawk's touring trio soldiers on, storming through the singer/guitarist's Neil Young-influenced tunes with fire and finesse.

In celebration of its tenth anniversary, the Getty Center presents Ten Years in Focus: The Artist and the Camera. The exhibition draws parallels between photography and artistry through a deep archive of high-quality prints acquired over the last decade. Standout works include Camera Obscura, a wood, glass, and brass replica of the architectural gadget prevalent in the medium's early history; Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey's various 19th-century daguerreotypes of old-world sites; and Vik Muniz's innovative photographic interpretation of Francisco de Goya's painted Roman god, Saturn, composed from found materials.

Misato Suzuki is acutely aware of nature's palette and geometry. With soothing shades of yellow, orange, brown, and blue, she paints amorphous forms that are simultaneously strange and familiar. Colorful spheres, indistinguishable from afar, resemble eggs, pebbles, or teardrops upon closer inspection. Each is nestled among intricately rendered charcoal lines, with thousands of delicate strands wrapping around the shapes and floating across the canvas. These complex threads alternately remind one of spider webs, DNA helices, tree branches, and gnarled roots, while the careful attention that Suzuki pays to organic elements is expressed most clearly in the earthy brown tones of varied hues achieved with coffee.
