If you think the American tradition of celebrating independence with hot dogs and fireworks is strange, wait until you see how the French do it. At this year's Bastille Day LA, festival-goers guzzle fine wine, hurl pétanque balls, and ogle scantily knickered ladies — and it's far from obvious how those entertainments relate to the storming of the government prison that touched off the French Revolution (except, perhaps, for a desire to send mimes to the guillotine). Still, it's nice to know that the spirit of liberty, equality, and brotherhood lives on in West Hollywood. So roll up those crêpes and let freedom ring.

  SPECIAL FEATURE
Jamie Lidell

In addition to breaking out the beatbox, Jamie Lidell samples and loops himself into a howling chorus of banshees. On his latest release, the intimately titled Jim, Lidell also brings Burt Bacharach-style harmonics to the dub plate. Earplug speaks to the man about his unlikely career trajectory and sartorial prowess.

Silent-film director F.W. Murnau's Sunrise is often cited on all-time best-of lists, and for good reason. The story of a wishy-washy farmer whose life is hijacked by a villainous femme fatale is brought to life through the same German-expressionist visual techniques that animated Murnau's other classic Nosferatu. Cinefamily gives Sunrise a modern facelift at the Silent Movie Theater, with live musical accompaniment by Austin-based instrumental band My Education. The group's original score lends the macabre film an emotional gravitas that suits its time-tested tale of heartbreak, murder, and mystery. - Jessica Jardine

Nathan Moore's road to rock 'n roll reads like the dream of many a spiky-haired teen. While working as a merch guy on tour with the Slip, the band overheard him singing in a hotel shower — that night, he was onstage. Later, while Moore was visiting the Slip during Boston's blizzard of 2003, the new foursome recorded a debut album under the name Surprise Me Mr. Davis. Today, the indie-rock outfit continues to lay down tracks that bounce between the catchy hooks and emotional urgency of Arcade Fire and the jazz-inflected, smarty-pants pop of early Elvis Costello. - Phil Kropoth

Conversations That Never Happened is a series of four communal, food-based art happenings in and around Telic's Chinatown gallery, created by a group of chefs, performance artists, and designers. Choose between sophisticated, reservations-only, avant-garde dinner theatre; a pot-luck version with a decidely DIY bent; a conceptual, public-art-inspired picnic; and a tongue-in-cheek TV-dinner night featuring a program of short films from the Echo Park Film Center, with an individual-seating setup exploring the American habit of eating alone in front of the TV. - Shana Nys Dambrot

Note: The Saturday, July 19 event takes place in tandem with Bonelli Contemporary's Game Day interactive performance.

One of the great perks of living in the twinkle-dusted Hollywood vicinity is not only getting to see hotly anticipated films before they officially open, but also getting to attend screenings where writers, directors, producers, and actors chat with the audience. UCLA Extension's Sneak Preview continues the tradition this summer with screenings of several upcoming films, followed by Q&A sessions with members of the films' casts and crews. This eight-week series includes action-adventure Transsiberian (July 16) starring Woody Harrelson, Emily Mortimer, and Ben Kingsley, with producer Mike Williams speaking after the screening. Moderated by Hollywood Reporter chief film critic Kirk Honeycutt, the program also features In Search of a Midnight Kiss (July 9), Captain Abu Raed (August 13), and more. - Jessica Jardine

The quintessential pop artist was much more than a factory for silkscreens of Marilyn Monroe and Campbell's soup cans. In fact, the prolific Andy Warhol created a staggering variety of art until his death in 1987 — and Michael Kohn Gallery has the photographs to prove it. Although Warhol's prints gained him the most notoriety, photography was also frequently an integral facet of his work. Culled from over 200 black-and-white photos taken between 1976 and 1987, the collection here shows the artist's penchant for glorifying city life's otherwise mundane moments. - Ashley Tibbits

Despite two albums of joyous indie pop, Omaha's Tilly & the Wall will likely always be known as "that band with a tap dancer instead of a drummer" — although, if you didn't know otherwise, you'd swear it was a Phil Spector mix of timpani and castanets. In fact, the group as a whole feels like an extension of Spector's pop symphonies. Derek Pressnall's adenoidal counter-harmonies might make the band's affinity with Conor Oberst a little too explicit (theirs was also the first release from Oberst's Team Love label), but between the boundless enthusiasm and mass of glockenspiel, brass, and strings, few can match Tilly's whimsical take on personal heartache and euphoric live show. - Stephen Gossett

With apologies to No Age, Dan Deacon is the strangest performer ever to grace the Fridays Off the 405 stage. Known for his hilarious, sweat-soaked dance parties, Deacon uses a pile of tone generators, pedals, and thrift-store keyboards to produce kid-friendly, rainbow-hued noise — a Day-Glo foundation for oddball gibberish-poetry anthems that appeal to music snobs and candy ravers alike. Don't be surprised if his lightning-speed tempos keep up until the party stops. LA hip-hop torch-bearers Brother Reade offer a contrast to the madness, coupling deep electro textures with literate, rapid-fire rhymes. - Chloe Leichman

For four years, a rotating posse of resident turntable maestros — including DJ Jedi, DJ Seven57, DJ Kaleem, and ringleader DJ J-Logic (aka J-Wonder) — have been spinning a mix of chilled-out classic soul, hip-hop, Afrobeat, dancehall, and deep house to pluck you from your post-work-week haze. The night celebrates its fourth anniversary tonight with the mighty J-Logic behind the decks, and an all-star lineup of surprise guests from around the block. - Jessica Jardine

This dual exhibition from British artist Gillian Wearing begins with Pin-Ups, displayed at the Regen Projects' Almont Drive location. For her collaboration with illustrator Jim Burns, Wearing scoured the Internet for non-professional models to pose for a series of glamour photos, which she then transformed into old-fashioned (and quasi-erotic) portraits. At Regen Projects II, her video Family History goes back to the roots of reality television by revisiting the BBC's 1974 series The Family and exploring the media's influential cultural role. Both exhibits demonstrate Wearing's insatiable curiosity about modern voyeurism. - Ashley Tibbits

After selling out the Ford last summer, the TAIKOPROJECT drum spectacular arrives again, bringing the tradition of Japanese taiko drumming to a new generation. For the uninitiated, the incredibly high-paced rhythmic onslaught — carried out on beautifully polished wood drums the size of oil barrels — must be seen (and heard) to be believed. TAIKOPROJECT brings together taiko groups from across the state for this year's show, which includes the first and oldest American taiko group, San Francisco Taiko Dojo, and its leader, Seiichi Tanaka, the "father of taiko in America." - Jessica Jardine

Grab your best amis for a jolie good time at Los Angeles' seventh-annual Bastille Day Festival. Unlike the events of 1789 that touched off the French Revolution, there (probably) won't be an unruly mob of peasants looking to overthrow the monarchy. Instead, expect crowds of French-fried Angelenos enjoying fine wines, gastronomic delights, Polynesian dancers, competitive pétanque, the popular Parisian waiters' race, and, of course, la musique. A full day of French-leaning modern and classic tunes includes DJs and live sets from Jessica Fichot, Adele Jacques, and a cadre of eclectic Francophile performers. Just watch out for falling mimes. - Yolanda Evans

There's intelligent dance music, and then there's intelligent dance music. Since 1998's quasi-objects LP, which exclusively relied on found sounds, Matmos have crafted entire albums based on literary and historical concepts — 2006's excellent The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of a Beast is a collection of abstract "sound portraits" of luminaries such as Ludwig Wittgenstein, William S. Burroughs, and Patricia Highsmith. Their recent Supreme Balloon, however, is a more joyous, less cerebral affair, replete with retro-future synths, and cheeky bloops and bleeps. At tonight's show, expect an abundance of digital noise, quirky melodies, and the same playful charm that made the group's intellectual bravado bearable in the first place. - Nick Earhart

Just like the A.O.S. song says, history repeats itself. The new exhibition at George Billis Gallery offers a refreshing take on mid-19th-century realism, as an eclectic group of figurative painters — including Terry Thompson, Derek Buckner, and Jorge Santos — re-interprets the aesthetic movement with a contemporary sensibility. Sharp lines, energetic brushwork, compelling palettes, systematic curves, and perfectly recreated cultural symbols evoke a strange sense of hope — a strength and rebirth coming from the varied readings of a historical moment. - Mikelle Schwartz

If you've always wanted to sit in a theater watching a film in which puppets sit in a theater watching a film about the making of the film they're watching, tonight's screening of The Muppet Movie can finally satisfy that desire. Under-appreciated and under-sung (the soundtrack is long out-of-print), Jim Henson's 1979 masterpiece (sorry, Dark Crystal fans) is an origin myth, a pseudo-documentary, a musical, a puppet show, a road movie, and a cautionary tale, all with a dense meta-narrative. Hilarious and inspiring, The Muppet Movie provides all the life lessons any young frog needs to get out there and make a name for himself. - Dave Marley

BANG! Fully Loaded sits at the intersection of the group art show, the modern penchant for excavating problematic historical/cultural symbols, and urban culture's taste for the multimedia spectacle. For the show, an eclectic group of local artists — whose media range from illustration to fashion design, and from painting and photography to custom-car design — was invited to reinterpret the Filipino Barrelman totem, a bawdy, phallocentric tribal image that is both beloved and reviled for its politically incorrect bombast. - Shana Nys Dambrot

Los Angeles painter, installation artist, and (most recently) video artist Mark Bradford has exhibited in some of the world's most prestigious galleries and museums, but he never forgets where he comes from. The South Central native maintains his studio in the old neighborhood and extends his political awareness outward, using his art to explore African-American life beyond LA. Like many, he was outraged by the tragedies of Katrina; a new rooftop installation atop Steve Turner Contemporary Gallery features a responsive painting that's viewable only from the air (or online at the gallery's 24/7 live streaming camera). Simply stating "Help Us," the roughly painted sign recalls the storm victims' own unforgettable hand-painted pleas. - Shana Nys Dambrot
