Los Angeles
Jul 15-21, 2008

Why mount up just any old show when you can throw yourself a proper summer festival? Outfest takes its bill of queer indie flicks outside with an evening of screenings at the Ford, while HippieFest gives '60s pop rock the same open-air treatment at the Greek, and the HARD Summer Music Fest brings hip-hop to our Downtown streets. Universal Studios hosts the modern update of the festival format with Download 2008, which showcases plenty of live bands made famous by that little ol' thing called the Internet. If you still crave more al fresco love-ins, spend the night on the beach at Santa Monica Pier's Glow, a dusk-to-dawn light and sound extravaganza. Now get out there and surf that crowd.

SPECIAL FEATURE
Marlene Dumas
|
|
|
One of the most influential and controversial painters working today, Marlene Dumas brings a dark intensity to her work. Favoring subjects with profound sociopolitical subtexts, the South African-born, Holland-based artist addresses explosive issues of gender, race, religion, and explicit sexuality through the prism of her striking, graphic, heavily worked portraiture.

Sludge-metal pioneers and left-coast heroes the Melvins have released more than 25 albums in about as many years. This evening, the band celebrates its latest, Nude with Boots, with an in-store performance at Hollywood outpost Amoeba Records. The new LP is the second in the Melvins' current incarnation, which features founder King Buzzo and long-time drummer Dale Crover alongside the rhythm section from like-minded metalheads Big Business. Expect healthy portions of the propulsive — and uncannily tuneful — new material, along with a dose of psychedelic noise from decades past.

For this month's installment of Let's Independent, you might want to wear your favorite shoes; not your walking or even your dancing shoes, but the ones you most enjoy staring at — 'cuz that's what you'll be doing as three local goth-gaze acts take the stage in slow-mo succession. The Black Pine take the pixie-fronted retro-indie archetype to brainy heights, while the Black Kites throw a little more blues into a similar sound, and EXITMUSIC get outright spacey behind their siren of a lead singer.

Old school meets new school as arranger/conductor Van Dyke Parks joins forces with free spirit Inara George. A friend and a collaborator of her father, Parks has known George since she was born. Parks had already worked with Randy Newman, Brian Wilson, and, more recently, U2 and Fiona Apple, so it was only a matter of time before he joined the upcoming songstress in the studio. Touring in support of their recent collaboration An Invitation, the two offer a rare opportunity to see old Hollywood seamlessly meld with a new, bohemian sound.

Not to be bound by the usual trappings of the female folk-singer genre, Meiko has the sort of innocently romantic lyrics and sweet, pure voice (with shades of the Indigo Girls and Carole King) that practically screams "crossover sensation." Meiko has recently carved out a considerable folk-pop niche, having been championed by Nic Harcourt and featured on Grey's Anatomy. Tonight, she's joined by soulful singer Lex Land, whose sultry piano pop recalls 1940s jazz clubs, whiskey-soaked nights, and hungover, foggy Sundays.

LA's Bodies of Water make life-affirming indie pop, a happy-go-lucky mashup of Arcade Fire's heart-thumping arrangements, the Polyphonic Spree's communal euphoria, and the Go! Team's joie de vivre. One need only hear the band's anthemic "Doves Circle the Sky" for proof of its interminable good cheer. Tonight, the many-membered collective, whose unbridled exuberance drew the attention of Secretly Canadian, hits up the Echo to celebrate the release of its new album, A Certain Feeling.

The upcoming installment of the Batman film franchise, The Dark Knight, has been subject to a media blitz of epic proportions in recent months. Lauded director Christopher Nolan is behind the lens again, and A-lister Christian Bale fills out the Batsuit, but with the passing of Heath Ledger in January, the film's mystique ballooned, especially given the Oscar buzz surrounding Ledger's portrayal of the Joker. In an inspired move, the Arclight braces for the onslaught of curious fans by holding an opening day/night 24-hour screening cycle that starts at midnight on Thursday. Multiple showtimes have already sold out, so if you want to go, hurry up and send the Bat Signal.

Wolf Parade's 2005 full-length debut, Apologies to the Queen Mary, marked the arrival of a compelling new force in indie rock — a pair of distinctive songwriters with a taste for shambling synth lines, driving guitars, and raucous drums. The band's second LP, At Mount Zoomer, may have fewer wild, euphoric high points, but it's focused and self-assured, proving that Wolf Parade are more than just the sum of their parts. As the band develops a unified sound and reins in the push and pull of competing artistic voices, it finds a sweet spot where prog rock and pop magic converge with all the agreeable grandiosity and controlled chaos of a fireworks display.

Darker My Love's overdriven soul isn't the most original thing in the world — imagine the Jesus & Mary Chain channeled by the Brian Jonestown Massacre — but give the LA-based band credit for creative album promotion (lucky attendees of several recent shows walked away with a gratis special-edition 7-inch). It plays tonight with Pitchfork-anointed buzz band Crystal Antlers, a group that takes a free-form, orchestral approach to psyched-out indie, layering sizzling rockers with trippy, space-obsessed interludes. Hot off the Fuck Yeah tour with Matt & Kim, Team Robespierre, and the Death Set, among others, the Cali five promise a soaring, sludgy set.

Kori Newkirk transforms the mundane into the monumental with his new installation, RANK. The deceptively simple sculpture — an outsized, mirrored podium — invokes the theatricality of American politics, wherein messages are lobbed at the public, but the public can only see itself reflected in the onslaught. Also, video artist Miguel Angel Rios presents Crudo (Spanish for "raw"), an alarming and hypnotic work in which a man dances before an audience of hungry dogs while wearing a suit covered with raw meat. The bizarre ritual fits oddly well with Newkirk's suspicions about the political circus.

In an inspired avant-garde mashup, the beat gurus of Dublab lock horns with the Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound (SASSAS) for an epic dusk-to-dawn art-and-music showdown. The all-night event promises a range of visual and auditory treats, including semi-ambient performances by the likes of Albert Ortega and Steve Roden alongside video by Jessica Bronson and beats by Dublab Soundsystem and Part Time Punks. Comfy cushions and sleeping bags are encouraged, and, should you need more soothing, there's plenty of free tea and water.

Having refined her musical act since the age of eight, Nicole Gordon is no stranger to the stage. Tonight, the LA-based singer/songwriter brings her unique brand of Americana to the Echo, with songs that somehow sound both brand new and sweetly familiar. Her vocals could carry the show accompanied by a single washboard and the sound of spoons clanking against an old man's knee, but skillful guitar picking and charming organ contributions don't hurt. Gordon has drawn favorable comparisons to such varied songstresses as Sarah McLachlan and Shakira, but such far-ranging praise only affirms her astonishing range.

Canadian chanteuse Leslie Feist has had quite a year. The singer/songwriter (and sometime Broken Social Scene member) released her third solo album, The Reminder, to critical and popular hosannas — and, of course, her song "1234" was featured in an Apple commercial. She tops it all with a headlining spot at the Hollywood Bowl, joined by New York-based '60s-soul revivalists Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, who have received some glowing reviews of their own for a fiery Coachella performance and their most recent album, 100 Days, 100 Nights. Pacifika, a female-led group with a relaxed, Latin chill-out sound, open.

There's no need to stick with one kind of entertainment in the city when you can pop into Safari Sam's weekly Black Bird Cabaret and see illusions, comedy, burlesque, live music, and drag performances all in one night. After the onstage entertainment wraps, a swinging dance floor opens up, giving you the chance to show off some of your own fancy moves. The '30s speakeasy vibe adds pizzazz to a venue known for its rotating roster of indie bands, though it also means adhering to a dress-to-impress eveningwear code — better hang on to that thrift-store dinner jacket.

Zac Brown may sing about the little things in life, like cold beer and "a pair of jeans that fit just right," but there's nothing small about this good ol' boy's early success. Blending down-home country lyrics with the musical prowess of a jam band, Brown has already played his ditties in support of the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Willie Nelson. While Brown's "Toes" may be this generation's "Margaritaville," his "Chicken Fried" rocks harder than anything by country-pop princes like Kenny Chesney and Dirks Bentley. Brown's formerly solo act has been enhanced by a supporting cast of a fiddler, a bassist, an organist, and a drummer, and the full band plays his sing-along-ready songs tonight.

Living in Sweden proved to be an invaluable influence on Victoria Reynolds' artwork. Not only does she emulate the painstakingly naturalistic vanitas (often-morbid still-life paintings representing the meaninglessness of life) of old Northern European masters, but her subject matter — reindeer flesh — is inspired by the Lapland village's dependence on the mammal. Attending reindeer slaughters and observing the way the people of the area honor and use the animals (much like Native Americans do with the buffalo) has informed the painter's renderings of their flesh and organs — as lush and lovely as fresh, unfolding flora.

Eric Bogosian made the leap from sputtering performance artist to Pulitzer Prize-nominated playwright with his fiery, rant-filled Talk Radio. Known for a dark, abrasive comedic style, Bogosian went on to pen a round of subversive hits including Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll and subUrbia. The play that started it all, Talk Radio is the tale of a caustic late-night shock jock who rages at a decaying United States by viciously confronting the guests who call in to his program. Twenty-one years after its premiere, Talk Radio is still an adrenaline-fueled masterpiece.
