LA boasts more than its fair share of exhibitionists and immodest beauties. The good news is, if you're inspired to take off your clothes, you're not alone — plenty of Angelenos enjoy getting back to the, um, basics. Jancar Gallery offers 18-and-over attendees a fresh perspective on eroticism in contemporary art. And if you haven't seen the Marlene Dumas survey at MoCA yet, don't delay: its mix of haunting portraiture and sexually charged politics is one of the museum's most impressive shows to date. And if, after all that, you've still got a little flesh fantasy, go see a special screening of Shaft and let Richard Roundtree show you how to get your groove on like they did back in the day. One piece of advice before you show off your birthday suit: make sure someone's got a camera, or else it doesn't count.

  SPECIAL FEATURE
John Banville

After winning the coveted Man Booker prize in 2005 for his novel The Sea, John Banville made a mysterious move. Eschewing the elaborate style that brought him fame — and that routinely garners comparisons to Nabokov, Beckett, and Proust — he instead churned out a trio of hard-boiled crime novels under the pen name Benjamin Black.

The musical wizards of Dublab are dazzling behind the turntables, and now they're getting behind the camera and inviting some creative friends to put on a show before the lens. Cinefamily hosts a special premiere screening of VisionVersion, a new project bringing together musicians like Baby Dee, Daedelus, Ariel Pink, HEALTH, Langhorne Slim, and Tom Brosseau as well as the cinema of Matt Amato, Saul Levitz, Rob Schroeder, and Fernando Cardenas. During the big night, the Dublab kids create a meta-episode of VisionVersion by filming a live installment at the venue. DJs and a surprise band round out the evening. - Jessica Jardine

For the 11th year in a row, International Pop Overthrow lands in Los Angeles. Curated by founder David Bash, the two-week festival features more than 150 bands from around the world and brings pop-music appreciation to new heights. Tonight's installment at Spaceland showcases the guitar-driven rock and smooth vocals of LA's own Kristian Hoffman, while Saucy Monky combine the catchy Britpop hooks of Oasis and female harmonies belted out with Dixie Chicks-style conviction. As a change of pace, Aaron David Gleason sings R&B grooves over sounds so complex that you could get lost between the layers. - Phil Kropoth

Admission to an American Ballet Theatre performance guarantees a view into an opulent procession of grace and beauty. In what may be one of the few events that makes crossing the Orange Curtain worthwhile, ABT brings the West Coast premiere of Rabbit and Rogue, the 15th work by one of the true icons of dance, Twyla Tharp. There isn't a style that Tharp hasn't left her print on, including those explored in projects with David Byrne, Milos Forman, Mikhail Baryshnikov, the New York City Ballet, and the Paris Opera Ballet. With music composed by Danny Elfman and the virtuosic techniques of the stellar principals, Rabbit and Rogue has the potential to fit snugly into ABT's vast repertory. - Allen Moon

First conceived as a mainstream (read: white) detective story, Gordon Parks' 1971 film, Shaft, evolved into a cornerstone of the blaxploitation genre and a cinema classic. Part Good Times, part The Sopranos, the movie tells the story of a private investigator (Richard Roundtree) who navigates the twists and turns of '70s Harlem to rescue a mobster's daughter. Not only did Shaft clean up at the box office, it also nabbed an Oscar for its theme tune, performed by Isaac Hayes. As rumors about a sequel to John Singleton's 2000 adaptation continue to circulate, check out the masterpiece in all its original glory. - Julian Hooper

With more than 45 albums under his belt, Zimbabwean guitarist Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi is as prolific as he is controversial. Despite causing altercations with the government, his pop-infused chimurenga music continues to set the tribulations of his home country — political violence, famine, AIDS — optimistically against a background of traditional mbira and katekwe drumming patterns. He appears tonight with his band, the Black Spirits, which includes several musicians that shared the stage with Mtukudzi in the '70s as rock group Wagon Wheels. Ghanaian reggae artist Rocky Dawuni opens, combining dub and Afrobeat stylings with turntablism and a politically conscious bent. - Anna Wiener

Tonight's Animation Showcase provides a selection of inspired short films by traditional and avant-garde animators from around the world. The August 21 installment screens The Universe of Keith Haring, an eye-opening look at the artist's personal and professional worlds, complete with a trippy techno soundtrack courtesy of Angelo Talocci.   In the early '90s, Highways Performance Space was the prime spot in LA to get in touch with the freshest and most vital voices in underground dance. Now that the LA scene is experiencing a renaissance, the innovative ideas are flowing again, and Highways stands poised to contribute to this proliferation with SWEAT!, its new summer dance festival. Gathering progressively-minded choreographers from New York and LA, Highways curates a three-week offering of works that recalls those cities' early days of unbridled creativity. - Allen Moon

Tonight is your chance to follow the progressive hip-hop stylings of Waajeed (of Slum Village) and his partner Saadiq, two talents who make up the Detroit-based duo Platinum Pied Pipers. The 2003 release of Ridin' High, a collaboration with nu-jazz and broken-beat sensation Dwele, catapulted PPP into the limelight, ultimately leading to the release of their 2005 debut, Triple P. A massive treat for fans of butter-smooth, streetwise rhymes laced with rugged, soulful beats, the Pipers' raw sound means a raucous good time for all. LA's own Kutmah and Gaslamp Killer support at another Saturday-night sure shot from the ArtDontSleep arsenal. - Amanda Moshier

As its subtitle states, Jancar Gallery's Narratives of the Perverse is not open to anyone under the age of 18. According to gallerist Tom Jancar, the show was designed to "bridge and blur the boundaries" between the sort of erotica found in contemporary fine art and that of individuals with a triple-X bent. Argentinean graphic illustrator Ignacio Noe's smart, sexy adult comics are juxtaposed with updates on the classic nude by contemporary artists including Sherie Franssen, Roger Herman, and Hubert Schmalix. - Alexx Shaw

The Engine is an ultra-modern film-projection device that blends sculptural form with engineering function to unique effect. This fancy gizmo is at the heart of the Engineering Cinémathèque's summer film series, and is employed tonight by the Slamdance Film Festival to showcase some of the best works screened there in the last year. Eight filmmakers see their award-winning pieces projected through the Engine's 1,000-pound steel hulk and onto a rotating 17-foot screen. After the screenings, there is complimentary beer and wine, and more experimental moving pictures presented by the self-styled "techno-primitive" cinema group Bizzurke Army. - Jessica Jardine

Despite a PLUG here and a plug there, XBXRX have always gotten the same old knock: they only have two speeds, fast and faster. It's true, but given the indiesphere's love of all things drone and minimal, the trio's motion-blurred spazz has never been more welcome. Their notoriously chaotic shows hit almost every noise-rock note of the last 20 years: grind-punk, Am Rep sleaze, Providence discord. For their next trick, they promised to split the difference between last year's (relatively speaking) full-lengths: the "song" album Wars and the "experimental" workouts on Sounds. - Stephen Gossett

Tonight's line-up at the Smell is nothing short of an east-meets-west indie event. Making their way from NYC, the Urxed feature Rob Barber, one half of Brooklyn-based tribal psychedelic duo High Places, while Soft Circle harnesses the talents of former Lightning Bolt and Black Dice member Hisham Bharoocha. The other half of the bill, meanwhile, is all LA. Rockers Abe Vigoda are the latest band from the Smell scene to be anointed by Pitchfork, while electronics fiend Lucky Dragons (aka Providence scene vet Luke Fischbeck) recently earned himself a spot in this year's Whitney Biennial with a series of mesmerizing performance pieces. - Joe Blankholm

Cambodian artist Aragna Ker can't help but poke and prod at cultural meanings until they fall apart. His elaborate mixed-media installations infuse Asian traditions of ritual and ceremony with a contemporary Western flair and explore the fine line between assimilation and individuality. His pieces co-opt images of Japanese cutouts, church steeples, and decorative patterns to illustrate conflicts, like nature vs artifice or individual vs culture, in carefully controlled experiments. While Ker may be influenced by a range of cultural signifiers, it's clear that his perspective is his own. - Heather Silva

During his 40-year career, rock 'n roll photographer Jim Marshall has captured some of Bob Dylan's, John Coltrane's, and Janis Joplin's most intimate moments. "There's a trust given and a trust received," says Marshall, who was the official photographer of Woodstock and the only man backstage with a camera at the Beatles' final concert. Marshall's strong ethics have enabled him to build a deep archive of iconic shots, including Jimi lighting his guitar on fire at Monterey Pop, Mick and Keith laying down tracks in the studio, and Bob chasing a tire down a litter-filled NYC street. This is the LA premiere of Platinum Prints, a collection of Marshall's most evocative work. - Phil Kropoth
