If you missed Sunday's bikini-and-absinthe spectacular at the Custom, it's OK; just don't let it happen again. Maybe you caught Olympic fever or a bad case of the LA flu (it happens to the best of us). Luckily, between Let's Independent's two-year anniversary, KCRW DJ Jason Eldredge's freshly minted CD, a new show from graf guru Buff Monster, and the return of the Sunset Junction street fair, you shouldn't have any problem getting back in good with the party gods.

- Shana Nys Dambrot, Managing Editor

What would you offer to the party gods?

Bridging the divide between classical-music chops and indie-rock chic, Juilliard alumnus Nico Muhly has one hell of a resume: besides being young and good looking, he has worked as Philip Glass' assistant and composed arrangements for Antony, Björk, and Will Oldham. In fact, The New Yorker recently came just short of labeling him the composer of the iTunes generation. But despite his high profile, Muhly prefers low-key collaboration. After chamber concerts at Carnegie Hall and the Whitney Museum in New York, Muhly embarks on a tour of close-knit performances with compatriots Doveman and Sam Amidon. - Max Goldberg

It's a momentous evening for the folks at Radio Free Silverlake: tonight they celebrate the second anniversary of their monthly Let's Independent showcase. The evening opens with a rare acoustic set by Death to Anders, whose new record, Fictitious Business, dropped a few months ago to warm reviews. Echo Park rockers the Savages hit the stage in all their anthemic glory, while local faves Xu Xu Fang headline with some gorgeously downbeat psychedelia. It's a "Low Dough Show" presented by Dewars, with $3 drinks all night — a fitting touch to a celebratory evening. - Jorge Barriere

The international artists in the MAK Center's long-standing residency program unveil what they've been working on for the past six months. The Schindler House hosts the presentation of final projects from Austrian artists Manuela Mark and Raimund Pleschberger, Canadian architect Paul Dallas, and the collaborative trio of Eldine Heep, Oona Peyrer-Heimstätt, and Paul Peyrer-Heimstätt. Gleaning perspectives from their temporary home in the nearby R.M. Schindler-designed Mackey Apartments, the artists' works are inspired by their SoCal sojourns; but as in past years, the perennial issues of weather, traffic, and celebrity are as likely to inform the projects as are politics or art history. - Ashley Tibbits

Jason Eldredge (of KCRW) and Jeremy Wineberg (of Invisible DJ Records) have iPod playlists most of us can only dream of. They also share a taste for global, forward-leaning productions rife with linguistic gymnastics and uptempo soul. Thank the beat gods the two have deigned to give us an auditory peek at some of those tracks on their new CD, Accidental Rhythm, as part of tonight's release party. Club Moscow's usual home at Boardner's is occupied with a film shoot tonight, but not to worry: it's Safari Sam's to the rescue with an offer to host the beat brigades. Posh local act Love Grenades keep the alien dance party going with their breathless disco nova, while Casxio modernize Sly & the Family Stone-style funk. - Shana Nys Dambrot

Traditional paper and canvas simply won't do for New York artist Josh Dorman, who employs vintage maps and textbook diagrams as foundations for his fantastical collages. But instead of being practical, literal guides to concrete destinations, the found materials translate the ambiguous and symbolically fraught travels of self-exploration. In Within Four Miles: The World of Josh Dorman, the resulting mixed-media pieces are personal and sacred to the artist, but also communicate their talismanic power to the viewer. In conjunction with this CAFAM exhibition, George Billis Gallery's Culver City location features a related collection of new work by the nationally renowned artist, opening in October. - Ashley Tibbits

Staten Island's royal family (the Wu-Tang Clan) is a little lighter this evening, as head honcho GZA brings his downplayed swagger and smooth flow to LA. Of course, this is nothing new: the Brooklyn rapper hasn't rested much since the Clan's early-'90s hey-day — this year he released 8 Diagrams with Wu while still finding time for a sold-out solo tour in support of his critically acclaimed solo album Liquid Swords. Refusing to raise his voice or even deign to show off a silly dance move, GZA stays the course and gives the fresh coast a taste of his brand new album, Pro Tools. - Chloe Leichman

Pawn Shop Gallery reinvents itself as the LA half of the new venture Crisp London Los Angeles with an inaugural exhibition of recent photographs and video work by local artist Nathan Danilowicz. Using a voracious hunter-gatherer approach to sourcing content for his multivalent narrative images, the artist constructs familiar fictions by harnessing the same technological filters that often cloud our perceptions in the world of new-media art. A concurrent exhibition of his more delicate drawings and photos documenting his witty public performances in Amsterdam opens this week in the gallery's London outpost. - Shana Nys Dambrot

Café Tacuba have been rocking en Español since a group of graphic-design students got together to jam in Mexico City in 1989, but most of their US acclaim — including a 2004 Grammy — came about after they opened for Beck on his Midnite Vultures tour. An ardent Anglo following sprouted, and three albums and several soundtrack contributions later, the quartet is still churning out creative updates on everything from Mexican folk music and metal to hip-hop and electronica. Tonight, don't worry if you don't know the lingo — headbanging is a universal language. - Leah Taylor

Unless you're a goth historian, 19th-century cadavers, Victorian lace, and anatomical illustrations are not often everyday topics of interest. But Canadian artist Cindy Stelmackowich stumbled upon some historic texts while doing research for her PhD and made them the basis of her most recent body of work. Using a digital camera to record the medical illustrations, Stelmackowich dissects the imagery, fusing it with other objects from the era — glass vessels, etchings of destroyed ships — to create haunting collages. The result is an uneasy mix of science's emotional detachment and the art-making process' personal nature. - Heather Silva

Note: There is a gallery talk with the artist on Sunday, August 24th (2pm).

The 90-minute film follows co-director Cope2 and his crew (originally called "Kids Destroy") as they tag their way across New York City. Cope2's been commissioned to develop special-edition Converse sneakers and Adidas hoodies, called upon by Time magazine to design a Soho billboard — and he recently published an autobiography, modestly titled True Legend. Cope2 is on hand tonight, along with artists Mear One and Risk, for an evening of live painting, free food, and complimentary street education for all.   - Phil Kropoth

The Los Angeles Jewish Symphony's presentation on the Sephardic-Latino Connection is a musically and culturally illuminating experience. The symphony explores the musical trajectory of Sephardic Jews — emigrants from the Iberian Peninsula of modern-day Spain and Portugal — while contrasting it with the rich Latino musical heritage. Featured performers include flamenco guitarist Adam del Monte, harpist Marcia Dickstein, Argentinean singer Marcelo Gindlin, and the Mariachi Divas. Guests to the Ford Amphitheatre are invited to picnic prior to the show. - Jessica Jardine

Comprising selections from the nearly 1,000 works that European-native-turned California-great Hans Burkhardt personally donated to Cal State Northridge (where he taught before his death), this exhibition considers the artist's use of modernist abstraction, expressionism, and poetic naturalism in paintings, drawings, and prints. Burkhardt's works address the mysteries of everyday life — the dismay of war, the reality of love, the deceit of politics — while considering the socio-political events of his time. Accompanying the exhibit is a catalog of essays written by curator and art-history professor Betty Ann Brown and Jack Rutberg, whose LA gallery represents the artist's considerable estate. - Alexx Shaw

Note: There is a gallery talk with exhibition curator Professor Betty Ann Brown on Monday, August 25th (10am).

The work of New Zealander Rozi Demant depicts feathered friends, but her birds don't always stand for things like freedom, peace, and beauty. Demant's utterly unique paintings are characterized by glamorous callipygian nudes, captive avian flocks, bloody images of sexual dominance, and the emotionally fraught — yet whimsical — lighting and landscapes associated with fairy tales. Her most mannerist anatomical tell, at least in this series, is the spindly, balletic elongation of her sirens' legs; an unsettling, haunting gesture that underscores the mythological quality of her scenes. - Shana Nys Dambrot

Israeli Women: A Portrait in Photographs looks at Israel's female citizenry as a reflection of the state's 60-year history of independence. Drawing on documentary and journalistic pieces from Skirball's own collection and prestigious sources including the Central Zionist Archive and the National Photo Collection, over 60 photographs depict women in roles ranging from gunslinging soldier to maternal caregiver. But whether embracing sexuality, flexing their muscles, or flaunting the latest trends, the ladies in these images aren't just examples of womanhood. Rather, the photos show how women in present-day Israel often act and dress in ways that blur the line between masculinity and femininity. - Phil Kropoth
