Not that we need to tell you, but it's never been more clear that Angelenos are hungry to get out and participate in the cultural discourse in all its forms — the more, the better. You may have noticed last week's launch of the Flavorpill 50 program here in town. My favorite thing about it is that now, many of our favorite progressive arts and entertainment purveyors can augment the calendar at our homepage with fresh events, ticket sales, and giveaways every day. Plus our crackerjack staff is busier than ever scouting for goodness to bring your way. Just this week we've got edgy comedy, self-sufficient design, politically charged theater, plus loads of art and music. There are a million reasons we choose to live here, and now even more of them are available at Flavorpill.

The surreal life
Mark Moore Gallery wants you to take a look and gain some Fresh Perspectives with its upcoming group show Ultrasonic IV. An annual survey of inspiring and emerging artists, Ultrasonic this year focuses on the “relativity of experience in perception,” meaning that from the mundane to the profane, and from photography to video and sculpture, perhaps nothing is quite how it first appears to be.

PERFORMING ARTS: Comedy
An Evening with Fred Armisen

Best known for his work as a cast member on Saturday Night Live (and sometimes referred to as "the guy who does Obama on SNL"), Fred Armisen came to comedy by way of music. While playing drums in the punk band Trenchmouth, Armisen caught the TV bug and landed a role in 2002 as a featured player on SNL. With supporting roles in features like Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) and recurring gigs as the voice behind wacky cartoon characters on Adult Swim, Armisen still finds time for standup. Catch this star tonight when he performs live at Largo, along with a selection of special guests.

Celebrating the spirit of the bicycle through film, art, and music, the Bicycle Film Festival rolls into LA for the sixth consecutive year with a lineup directed toward fans of ten-speeds, recumbents, and everything in between. On August 26, Atlanta-based Deerhunter appear at the Eagle Rock Center for the Arts to help pay tribute to the two-wheeler, with their woozy, synth-addled brand of garage rock. August 27, the festival hosts the Joyride Art Show, and on August 28 and 29, the film screenings (and afterparties) hit the Downtown Independent. The festival winds down with its annual street festival on Sunday, August 30, directly across from Joyride in East Hollywood.

In today's volatile political climate, questions abound as to what, if any, limits on free speech and civic protest exist — and which, if any, political groups have the moral monopoly on democratic expression. Leave it to the Oscar-winning peace and social justice activist Tim Robbins and the Actors Gang to tackle these issues head-on. A much-anticipated return engagement of the Trial of the Catsonville Nine tells the true story of a 1968 anti-draft protest and its aftermath, asking the question, according to director Jon Kellam, "Is there a difference between breaking the law and committing a crime?"

Seven Los Angeles-based contemporary art galleries spread their wings and cruise with the Malibu seagulls for the inaugural edition of a three-day art fair highlighting LA. Buzz galleries China Art Objects, Chung King Project, Circus Gallery, The Company, Eighth Veil, Parker Jones, and *sister participate, showing the work of more than 40 national and international artists. Ditching the trade-fair, convention center booth-maze vibe in favor of a return to the quirkier days of hotel fairs, the galleries occupy classrooms and other curious spaces at the former high school, Malibu Country Mart. As an added bonus, the fair includes specially made site-responsive works, performances, and video installations.

Danish art-pop heroes Mew are busy supporting Nine Inch Nails, but lucky Angelenos get prolonged exposure to the band's famously creative visual side, as the trio settles into a week-long multimedia installation during the run-up to those sold-out local dates. The band's Mewseum at Zune's LA space includes photographic as well as a cinematic installation (Mew is famous for their elaborate animations and dramatic visuals), as well as a special live set and on August 31, the premiere of the breathtaking video trilogy directed by Martin De Thurah.

In 2001, aerialist, choreographer, and show-runner Terry Beeman founded the Terry Beeman Dance Company in order to "spiritually awaken the soul through contemporary, organic movement that is effortlessly understood." His latest production, Mental Head Circus, does all that and more, fusing cabaret with classical dance and pushing the boundaries of the genre while simultaneously reawakening the senses. Expertly trained performers challenge the limits of dance with a vaudeville-inspired program of daring acrobatics and fluid movement, effectively elevating the art of the circus.

Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda has a lot on his mind — literally. His parallel career as a visual artist often finds him examining the excesses of celebrity culture. Shinoda's paintings and digital works combine the already-intertwined memes of pop-cultural obsessions such as sex, death, money, and fame, using a multiplicity of styles, saturated palettes, and kaleidoscopic compositions that both portray and embody the self-same maximalism.
