Now under the stewardship of Miami Dade College, the Freedom Tower is finally being put to good use, opening its new gallery space with a blockbuster, not-to-be-missed Goya exhibition. Although Goya is widely known as one of the great Spanish painters, his printmaking works — all created at the turn of the 19th century — are ingeniously crafted and sometimes jarring visions that often expose the societal ills of the time. The show gathers Goya's complete engraving works, consisting of more than 200 etchings, and divides them by theme into four sections: the Caprices, the Disasters of War, the Bullfighting, and the Foolishness. Most importantly, with these precocious pieces Goya distinguished himself as a vanguard artist who would not succumb to traditional values or ways of thinking.
