Art Agitated Images: John Heartfield & German Photomontage, 1920-1938

An iconoclast ahead of his time, Berlin Dadaist John Heartfield (born Helmut Herzfeld) helped revolutionize modern photomontage, subversively using the medium to denounce the fascist regime's pernicious nature. Surveying his work between 1920 and 1938, Agitated Images displays Heartfield's book-cover designs, posters, and biting work for Die Arbeiter-Illustrierte Zeitung (The Workers' Illustrated Magazine), as well as a selection of 19th-century satirical illustrations that inspired the artist, magazine articles, and press photos to provide context for the work. Consider him an agitprop artist on one end, but ultimately Heartfield was an arresting-image-maker who cared most about disseminating truth and justice.
