For many, California embodies a particular Arcadian ideal. The state's rural splendor was the main source of inspiration for early 20th-century artist couple Arthur and Lucia Mathews, who together founded the "California decorative style" — a loose aesthetic that draws from both European influences and the international arts-and-crafts movement. The Norton's exhibition gathers more than 60 of the Mathews' creations, including landscapes, murals, stained glass, carved frames, furniture, graphic design, illustrations, and decorative pieces whose beauty would entice anyone to drop everything and go west.
