Art Poets of the Dark: Movietelling

Back in the days of the silents, many films, especially in Japan and Korea, were shown accompanied by narrators who would interpret the images and actions on the screen in a way that was relevant to the audience members' lives. Tonight, after an intro from poet and scholar Walter K. Lew, Jen Nellis reworks an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents into a surrealist fable, dennis M. somera turns dance scenes from West Side Story (1961) into a tale of US imperialism in Puerto Rico, and Kate Ann Heidelbach re-envisions The Song of Bernadette (1943). While the images may be familiar, the interpretations are anything but.
