A quiet, spiritual solitude inhabits Enrique Martínez Celaya's work, especially in his dark, ethereal oil-and-tar paintings. The Cuban-born artist makes effective use of texture and atmosphere in his varied oeuvre, which includes equally moving photographs, sculptures, and installations. For his solo show at MAM (partly inspired by the works of Swedish poet and Nobel Prize laureate Harry Martinson), Celaya has created five enigmatic, large-scale oil-and-wax paintings depicting a young girl, carrying an apparently dead leopard on her shoulders through the four seasons.
