Leonel Matheu, Definitions
Nov 19, 2007 – Jan 15, 2008
Mondays–Fridays (noon–7pm)

Leonel Matheu's work seems deceptively simple and naïve upon first glance, but each piece is ultimately underlain with a deeper, philosophical view of the world. The Cuban-born artist (whose father is, incidentally, the acclaimed trumpeter Arturo Sandoval) creates flat, sometimes layered compositions depicting clocks, edifices, odd characters, and random objects, each with a bit of an absurdist bent. For his solo exhibit at Dot Fiftyone, Matheu shows 16 paintings, ten drawings, and several video installations — including his playful "art animations."
