More Flavor: Lecture George Grosz: An Autobiography
-
- George Grosz, Cain, or Hitler in Hell
A close friend and frequent collaborator of the staunch anti-Nazi John Heartfield, George Grosz is most vividly remembered for his grotesquely rendered caricatures of Weimer-era Berlin — images that never would have seen the light of day had he not lived through an attempted suicide, a death sentence, trials for blasphemy and insulting the German state, Communism, anti-Communism, goading Hitler, and, finally, exile. But if his imaginings of America were inspired by early readings of James Fenimore Cooper and Bret Harte, its reality was far from idyllic. As Grosz said upon his return to Germany: "My American dream turned out to be a soap bubble." He then got drunk, fell down a flight of stairs, and died. Tonight, celebrate the life.
