Miami Beach Cinematheque says…

French director Bruno Dumont doesn't look upon his fellow humans too kindly. Maybe it's his interest in Greek and German philosophy; maybe it's his background in corporate video work. Whatever the cause, it makes for one cold, hard look at the underside of life. Flanders is no different. The tale of a hardscrabble farmer who falls on top of a vixen and then goes off to war, the film is perhaps Dumont's most beastly work to date. The man and his mates rape and kill with impunity, till one literally gets, er, nipped in the bud; the women long and yearn lasciviously, till one discovers that an ill-advised liasion has left her knocked up. It's mired in filth, steeped in melancholy, and about the closest thing there is to realizing our own primeval impulses.
