For centuries now, European and American artisans have used Chinese art and culture as a source of inspiration. Back in June 2005, the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, invited 22 studio furniture-makers from the US and Canada to join several of their contemporaries in China and explore traditions in Chinese period furniture from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The workshop result: a series of Western interpretations of historic Chinese pieces (with works by Brian Newell and Gordon Peteran, among others), now on view at the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale.
