Santa Fe-based artist Peter Sarkisian liberates video from the traditional frame. One of the most salient features of his recent work is the use of sculptural elements to intensify the video projection itself. In Sarkisian's new show at Bernice Steinbaum, he projects a video of people rock-climbing — with the boulders actually jutting out from the surface. Another piece displays an artist in his studio trying to adjust a flickering lamp that features a 3-D lightbulb fastened onto the screen. Multi-hued and playful, the works serve as representations of a complex engineering system, ultimately designed to suck in the viewer.
