Few North Americans cover our sister continent to the south with such grace and intelligence as Pulitzer Prize-winning Miami Herald columnist Andrés Oppenheimer. In his new book, Saving the Americas: The Dangerous Decline of Latin America and What the US Must Do, Oppenheimer warns of the long-term negative effects stemming from the Bush administration's de-emphasis of South America as a player on the world stage. The book, which Oppenheimer says began as "a message to Latin Americans about the decline of their region," is a sobering harbinger.
