It may have taken Rothko a few years to get to the "multiforms" that would make him famous, but those few years were hardly idle. Studying under Gorky and Weber, palling around with Gottlieb and Newman, swinging with a slew of surrealists, he and his work ran the gamut. After his one-man show at the Guggenheim seemingly disappointed everyone, however, Rothko went out West and collided with Clyfford Still. The rest, as they say, is art history.
