Film DocuSPAIN: Balseros (2002)
-
- Balseros
You hear a lot about Cuban political refugees — like those who arrived on the Mariel boatlift in 1980 — but there were also the 50,000 emigrants who fled in the early '90s during the Período Especial, after the USSR stopped shipping crude oil to the country. These balseros (rafters) took to the sea on mostly ramshackle transport (although some even hijacked a ferry) to reach the Florida coast. Co-directed by Carlos Bosch and Josep Maria Domènech, this Spanish-language documentary probes the lives of seven of those refugees over the course of seven years, tracking their fight for survival both in Cuba and the United States.
