Although some suspect Peter Coffin's work of hokey mysticism, the New York-based artist's sculptures and installations are actually clever deconstructions of commonly held notions. Case in point: his Untitled (Log with Model of the Universe) is a simple hollow log with a multicolored party light whose path outlines a torus shape. Coffin's Untitled (Rainbow) is made up of 30 found color photos, each containing bands of rainbows, arranged in a spiral to portray a curving image of a rainbow, in homage to Robert Smithson's iconic land-art piece Spiral Jetty.
