The big show, Art Basel Miami Beach hosts 200 of the world's best galleries under one roof in the ultimate fusion of the culture industry, the luxury-goods industry, and the jet set. Every wall and corner of the labyrinthine floor plan holds something to be contemplated or, depending on your cash flow, purchased. Though you'll behold more contemporary art in a day than you could otherwise in a year, the most awesome sight is the spectacle itself, as gallery assistants rush about, deals are made in myriad languages, careers are capitulated, and rivalries are cemented. Like a visit to the floor of the stock exchange, there's serious cash circulating. A range of supplemental programs — Art Sound Lounge, Art Video Lounge, the Art Salon (an hourly program of talks), and Art Basel Conversations — brings the focus back to the art.
