José Bedia's new show at Snitzer has a decidedly African bent, its large-scale acrylics on canvas inspired by the artifacts Bedia collected during his visits to northwestern Zambia in 2004 and 2006. The Cuban artist is more interested in aesthetic and emotional sensibilities than anthropology, however, emphasizing a direct relationship with his sources and conjuring their spirits with palpable artistic empathy.
