We're not sure why trumpeter Wallace Roney doesn't get more mainstream attention. He's got the pedigree: he was a child prodigy with perfect pitch, who went on to attend the Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Berklee College of Music. He's got the good story: going from broke and homeless to Miles Davis' protégé, eventually playing as Davis' stand-in for the tribute band that won a Grammy. And he's certainly got the chops — he's played with everyone from Blakey to Hancock, Coleman, Rollins, and Gillespie. Roney is precisely the caliber of musician that jazz snobs say is a dying breed, and his performance tonight is yet another huge score for Sandoval's, which continues to bring the best musicians on the planet to its cozy little corner of North Beach.
