Richard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde is tied to tragedy in numerous ways. The opera's first Tristan died soon after it debuted, and in the years since, two conductors have fallen dead while conducting the second act. But it is the story itself that is most tragic: a queen, a king, and a prince are all lethally entangled in the drama of unrequited love. Tonight, Cinema Paradiso screens a special filming of the opera — in HD and Dolby Digital sound, no less — recorded at Italy's famed La Scala, under the baton of celebrated conductor Daniel Barenboim.
