Few literary devices have been exploited more than the love triangle. This opera by Bizet, which debuted in Paris in 1863, features two friends who were once rivals for the same woman's affections. They have, of course, sworn her off, but all hell breaks loose when she reappears on the scene. Vows are made, others are broken, and the whole village burns down in epic flames. Soprano Maureen O'Flynn — well-regarded in regional opera houses across the US and recently lauded for her role in Roméo et Juliette at the Met — plays the object of everyone's affection.
