Evincing a cubist's predilection for deconstruction, Pennsylvania-based photographer Phil Stein also possesses a keen sense for detail. After printing several digital shots of a particular scene, all from slightly differing perspectives, he then cuts them up and reconstructs them as one image. The staggered compositions, mounted on rag board, wood, and Plexiglas, accentuate particular facets of the original images, creating a sort of Hans Hofmann-esque, push-and-pull dynamic. Currently on view at the Damien B. Contemporary Art Center, Stein's newest series involves urban streetscapes, mostly taken in New York's Chelsea neighborhood.
