Sadly, what begins as a utopia often ends in one hot mess. Such was the case with ancient Mesopotamia's capital city of Babylon — its cultural, intellectual, and political hub and the location of the Hanging Gardens (one of the Seven Wonders of the World). Besieged by invasions and inner turmoil, the model city eventually faded away. Drawing inspiration from the lost metropolis, Miami-based artist Luis Garcia-Nerey has constructed an elaborate installation of towers made from found objects and recycled wood — a mini-civilization populated by ominous, briefcase-toting statuettes. Garcia-Nerey's little world is completely engrossing, leaving viewers to seriously ponder issues of urban growth and history.
