This annual cinephile powwow may not enjoy the prominence of Cannes or Sundance, but each year the Miami International Film Festival grows in stature. The MIFF is rightly known as a major platform for emerging Latin and international film — for its 25th year, the festival once again offers a program of adventurous shorts, restorations, and world premieres. Highlights include the opening-night film La misma luna, Patricia Riggen's heart-wrenching drama about a nine-year-old Mexican boy who strikes out to find his mother in the US; Fados, a bewitching study of Portuguese music by Spanish director Carlos Saura; and the American premiere of Flawless, director Michael Radford's corporate-heist drama starring Demi Moore.
