This retrospective is the first large-scale Wilfredo Lam exhibition ever organized in a South Florida museum. Arguably the 20th century's most famous Cuban artist, Lam merged perspectives from his European avant-garde contemporaries (such as the Surrealists), elements of polymorphism, and more primitive Afro-Caribbean motifs. The artist traveled to Europe at the beginning of his career, where Picasso took him under his wing; he fled France in 1941, however, opting to return to his home in Cuba. There, by combining his influences into something entirely his own, Lam forged a new vision of modernism. This dazzling show features nearly 70 paintings and works on paper.
