Early in his career, Florida's John Westmark found inspiration in the abstracted landscape paintings of Richard Diebenkorn. But in the past few years, Westmark has developed a compelling reworking of mid-century painting all his own. His approach still draws on Diebenkorn's bold swathes of color and precisely balanced compositions, but he also introduces surprising materials. Combining cut-out sewing patterns, acrylics, and geometrical shapes, the artist creates a new visual language that, although abstracted, represents subjects as far flung as kitchen implements and Greek mythology.
