Brian Dennehy plays Stourley Kracklite, an American curator brought to Italy to assemble an exhibition honoring the work of French architect Étienne-Louis Boullée. But as his Italian counterparts begin to question Boullée's bonafides, Kracklite's health and marriage begin to crumble like a Roman ruin. With imagery straight off a classical canvas, a subplot drawn from Caesar's own lair, and music by both Belgian composer Wim Mertens and New York avant heavy Glenn Branca, The Belly of an Architect is director Peter Greenaway's most accessible, well rounded (and yes, strange) film.
