Queen Elizabeth loves Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester; Robert loves the queen's cousin, Mary Stuart, the Queen of Scots; and Mary is imprisoned by Elizabeth's command at Castle Fotheringhay. Robert attempts to intercede on his love's behalf, but when Mary and Elizabeth meet face to face, words are exchanged, and it doesn't end well for anyone — but especially for Mary. Gaetano Donizetti's less-than historically accurate tragic opera, which premiered at La Scala in 1835, is reprised by the famed company and captured for the big screen in HD and Dolby Digital sound as part of Emerging Pictures' opera series. Prima donnas Mariella Devia and Anna Caterina Antonacci perform the starring roles.
