In this bloody farce, our man Montriveau is warned not to handle the film's namesake weapon, which was used to behead Charles I. Next time he'd better listen — because as soon as his finger hits the blade, his whole Restoration-era world comes crashing down, and not even a fetching French lover can save him. Based on Balzac's La Duchesse de Langeais and directed by 80-year-old French New Wave survivor Jacques Rivette (famed for the 13-hour experimental epic Out 1), The Duchess of Langeais is graced with all the pomp of early 19th-century court life. The slinky set piece isn't trying to change the world, though — just serve up a dose of saucy period fun.
