Cinema Paradiso says…

In December of 1937, a million-member branch of the Japanese army invaded Nanking — then the capital of China — and proceeded to rape some 20,000 women and children, and murder upward of 200,000 other citizens. Had a group of European and American expats not been enraged and emboldened enough to form an International Safety Zone, the carnage could have been much worse. By Academy Award-winning writer/director-team Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman (Twin Towers, 2003), the documentary intersperses footage of the slaughter and survivor testimonials with heartbreakingly read diary and letter entries. Woody Harrelson, Mariel Hemingway, and Jürgen Prochnow do the bulk of the narrations.
