Few directors do horror like John Carpenter, and hardcore fans esteem In the Mouth of Madness as one of his most horrific. The story of a private eye (Sam Neill) hired by a publisher (Charlton Heston) to track down a missing novelist (Jürgen Prochnow), Carpenter's descent into the abyss within us all is as much an homage to H.P. Lovecraft (references to the master abound, including straight excerpts from his texts) as it is an exercise in how to exorcise demons — by joining them and descending into their own hell.
