Art Melanie Smith with Rafael Ortega: Parres Trilogy

British-born artist Melanie Smith examines contemporary life in the big city — and injects her work with a dose of turn-of-the-century malaise for good measure. Inspired by her adopted home of Mexico City (the world's third largest megalopolis), Smith transforms sights, textures, colors, buildings, and found objects into a compelling visual medley, exploring the urban dynamic as a whole, from earth to sky to street grid. For MAC@MAM, she presents Parres Trilogy, a three-part film series created in 2004 and 2005 with frequent collaborator Rafael Ortega. Two of her recent paintings are also on view in the museum's small New Works space.
