The Mars Volta may very well be responsible for some of the most Guitar Hero-worthy tunes out there. This generation's Rush rose from the ashes of indie do-gooders At the Drive-In, just as the latter was poised to explode onto the mainstream scene. With the fraught psychology and vaulting ambition of Pink Floyd, album art reminiscent of Scorpion, and orchestrations to frustrate even the most well-accomplished guitar-tab transcriber, the group proselytizes prog rock among the punk/indie crowd. That may not sound exactly like your cup o' tea, but there's more to the music than technical one-upmanship, and the live shows absolutely pulse with energy.
