Marta Arribas and Ana Pérez's film El tren de la memoria (The Memory Train) documents a dark period in Spanish history: in the 1960s, poverty and political strife drove roughly two million unskilled, unemployed, and illiterate Spaniards from their homes in search of work in other West European countries, primarily France, Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Amid the film's archival footage and contemporary interviews with the emigrants, Arribas and Pérez follow a pair of friends who, having parted ways in the rush to Germany, reunite decades after they've adjusted to their new lives.
