Film The Killer (1989)

Before there was a Reservoir Dogs, a Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, or any other hip, high-octane shoot 'em up ending in a Mexican standoff, there was John Woo's The Killer — perhaps Hong Kong's most influential cinematic export. Of course, the director got his gunplay pitting Sam Peckinpah against Sergio Leone, and his stylized story — an assassin (Chow Yun-Fat) accidentally blinds a young girl (Sally Yeh) and vows to kill to pay for her operation — came straight from 1967 French thriller Le Samouraï. Nonetheless, Woo makes the film his own, and an ultra-violent masterpiece at that.
