- Amber Doll, Photo: Simon Hare
"Hello, is it me you're looking for?" Amber Hawk Swanson asks her life-sized, silicone-and-steel doppelgänger. Amber Doll may not answer, but we can't stop talking about this Chicago-based artist's exhibition at Locust Projects. The inanimate twin is a sex doll that Swanson commissioned in her own likeness, and which she inserts into mundane settings like wedding receptions and theme parks. Amid Amber Doll's funerary installation is Swanson's photographic and video documentation of herself and her doll in action, getting Disney princess makeovers and posing lewdly for Girls Gone Wild. Swanson's unnatural attachment to Amber Doll is a comment on the nature of fetishes and examines the construction, reconstruction, deconstruction, and destruction of identity.
