Reading Les Standiford: Washington Burning

Architect and planner Pierre Charles L'Enfant may have been America's most patriotic Frenchman, but he also happened to be one of his era's most reviled citizens. Commissioned by Washington to build a dream Federal City, the Revolutionary War vet's hubris got him kicked off the project a mere two years after the building began. Still, his vision remained — despite backstabs from Jefferson, infighting within Congress, and a torching by the Brits in 1814. Les Standiford reads tonight from Washington Burning, which gives L'Enfant's story the same narrative zip the author lent to his John Deal series and Miami Noir.
