Film: Documentary Hats Off

Mimi Weddell is what they used to call a grande dame. Ninety-three years old, she glides out of her Manhattan apartment every day decked out in serious eye makeup and many-tiered hats, trailing capes and one-liners, never failing to turn heads. Such ladies, of course, flourish in New York, but few can call themselves working actresses still hustling to auditions to cover their bills; this is exactly the life that Weddell continues to lead. As a documentary, Hats Off fawns too much over its subject — but as an exploration of the complicated ways that people both resist and court growth throughout their lives, it fascinates.
