Reading Diana Abu-Jaber: Origin

When Diana Abu-Jaber switches it up, she really switches it up. The (mostly) Miami-based scribbler, well-known for her vivid explorations of Arab-American dichotomies, here zeroes in on the snows of Syracuse and concocts what could only be called a thriller — although it's easily ten times smarter than most current crime fiction. With a heroine straight out of CSI or Medium (if the chicks in those shows believed they'd been raised by apes), a storyline that stretches from cradle to grave, and a case as cold and hard as murder itself, Origin marks a brave stylistic departure for the author.
