- Christopher Priest, The Prestige
The "prestige" of Christopher Priest's award-winning work of high-Victorian invention refers to the grand finale of a magician's act; but "prestiges" are also what its envy-riddled illusionist calls the dead bodies left behind by a teleportation device used in his performances. The murderous machine, designed by electricity pioneer Nikola Tesla, is built to wreak vengeance on a fellow magician, but the fun really starts when one of the "prestiges" doesn't die. Christopher Nolan did a marvelous job bringing this smoke-and-mirrors story to the silver screen, but then again, the director had a fantastic fictional concoction as his blueprint.
