Film Taxi Driver (1976)

As we burrow deeper into the reality-TV age, Martin Scorsese's classic film portrait of lone gunman Travis Bickle gets scarier with each passing day. Played with time-bomb intensity by Robert de Niro at the peak of his acting powers, Vietnam vet Bickle decides to transform himself from a lowly cab driver into an avenging angel on the streets of New York, out on a mission to eviscerate everything and everyone he sees as evil, from politicians to pimps. The results are downright chilling, and consistently surprising. Tonight's screening is followed by an in-depth discussion with local film club Cinema Verité.
