- The Line King: The Al Hirschfeld Story
Caricature is often used to lampoon, but Al Hirschfeld saw the art form as a way to celebrate his subjects. From movie posters of Charlie Chaplin and The Wizard of Oz to his reproductions of entire Broadway casts in the New York Times, Hirschfeld relied on loving exaggeration rather than distortion to bring out the depths of his subjects — and did so until he died at age 99. His work is satire, but the kind that considers the soul of its target. This Oscar-nominated doc by Susan Warms Dryfoos, herself a scion of the Times empire, surveys the line man's long life with the same kindness he showed others.
