April is a stripper who can't do without the loot she makes at the Puma Club for Men, so when her elderly babysitter is hospitalized, she's forced to bring her three-year-old daughter to work. While April is, er, entertaining a client from a foreign land, the little girl gets loose in the club — and then disappears. April's client turns out to be one of the 9/11 hijackers, but you'll have to read the book to find out if the terrorist snatches the kid. Like House of Sand and Fog, Andre Dubus' new novel rips the skin off what we believe to be true, examines the wound, and then leaves it open to fester.
